The first formal stage of a UK grid connection application. A project at Gate 1 has an accepted application to connect to the grid and is queuing for detailed design and assessment by the network operator.
Gate 1 status is an early indicator of project ambition, not a commitment — many Gate 1 projects never reach construction. For lenders and investors, Gate 1 position confirms the project is active in the queue but carries no certainty about connection timing or terms.
Gate 2
Connection stage
The stage at which a grid connection applicant has received and agreed terms from the network operator — a Connection Offer accepted in principle. Reaching Gate 2 means the project has a viable connection route and agreed commercial terms with the network.
Gate 2 is a material transaction milestone. It affects project valuation, financing readiness, and planning timeline. Movement from Gate 1 to Gate 2 is one of the most significant status changes Cairnel monitors.
Transmission export capacity
Transmission
The contracted capacity for a generator connecting to the high-voltage national transmission network. It is the amount of electricity a project is entitled to export at the transmission level, measured in megawatts.
Reductions, surrenders, or transfers are significant events. A reduction may indicate project de-scoping; a surrender signals the project has withdrawn from the transmission queue entirely. Both have direct implications for asset value and financing.
Distribution connection register
Distribution
The register of projects seeking or holding distribution-level grid connections, maintained by regional network operators.
Register position indicates where a project sits in the local network queue. Movement in status — applications progressing, offers issued, capacity reserved, or connections completed — is a key signal of project progress for distribution-connected assets including solar, battery storage, and smaller generation projects.

The licensed company responsible for operating the local electricity distribution network in a given region of Great Britain. These operators manage grid connections for most renewable energy and storage projects below transmission voltage thresholds.
Connection timelines, capacity availability, and constraint profiles vary significantly between regions. A project's network region affects its connection queue dynamics, constraint risk, and the regulatory framework for curtailment. Cairnel monitors connection activity across four covered regions.
Firm capacity
Connection type
Connection capacity that is available without constraint — the project can export up to its agreed level at all times, regardless of network conditions. Firm capacity agreements give the generator unconditional access to the grid up to their contracted level.
Firm capacity is the preferred connection type for bankable projects. Lenders and offtakers can model revenue on the basis of uninterrupted export access. The availability of firm capacity at a given substation affects whether new connection applications can be accepted and on what terms — and is therefore a direct indicator of substation constraint status.
Constrained capacity
Connection type
Connection capacity subject to curtailment — the network operator may instruct the generator to reduce or stop exporting electricity during periods of local network congestion. Constrained connections are sometimes offered as an alternative where firm capacity is unavailable.
Constrained connections may be faster to obtain than firm, but carry dispatch risk that reduces predictable revenue. Understanding a project's constraint exposure — including constraint frequency and duration in its region — is material to financing, acquisition, and revenue modelling decisions.
Connection date
Project milestone
The agreed or expected date by which a project's grid connection will be energised and operational. Connection dates are often indicative at early stages and subject to revision as the queue, network works, and project construction programme evolve.
Slippage in connection date directly affects construction programme, revenue start date, and debt service schedules. For transactions in progress, an unexpected connection date change can require immediate review of financial models and conditions precedent. Queue position
Connection queue
Where a project sits in the grid connection queue relative to other applicants competing for capacity at the same connection point or substation. Projects ahead in the queue have priority for connection offers; projects behind must wait for capacity to become available.
Queue position is dynamic. Projects can advance if earlier applicants withdraw or reduce their capacity request. New applicants can be inserted with different priority. Tracking queue movement for specific projects — and at substations relevant to an investment — is one of the most valuable signals Cairnel monitors.
NSIP
Planning
Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project — large-scale energy and infrastructure projects consented through the Development Consent Order process, handled at national level rather than through the local planning system. Projects classified as NSIP include large battery storage installations and transmission infrastructure above certain capacity thresholds.
NSIP classification affects planning timeline, consenting risk, and the regulatory framework a project operates under. DCO consent timelines and conditions differ materially from local planning, with implications for project programmes and financing structures.
Project watchlist
Cairnel product
A named list of UK grid infrastructure projects that Cairnel monitors on a subscriber's behalf. Subscribers specify the projects they want to track — by project reference, name, or site — and Cairnel sends an alert when a monitored event is detected for any project on the watchlist.
The watchlist is the core Cairnel product. Monitor subscribers can track up to 20 projects; Adviser subscribers can track an unlimited number of projects. Events that trigger alerts include queue movement, capacity changes, company events, and planning decisions.
